From: Charlie Dirksen
12/7/94 Spreckels Theatre, San Diego CA "A Live One" double-live CD ("DLCD") Version of 'You Enjoy Myself'
The Twang is at 00:12. Opening segment standard... The pre-Nirvana segment begins around 1:19 with Fish whipping the
high-hat (gently whipping the hi-hat). It is very gorgeous and mesmerizing.. a true "vibration of life" sort of effect is attempted
(though not really successful, imo). Nirvana at 2:52.. the Nirvana section is beautiful. Standard. Mike's solo section kicks in at
3:35 or so, and is ok.. nothing very special or noteworthy. The pre-charge begins at 3:55 basically, and is played very well (fun
hearing Mike so prominent on this CD, eh..). Trey hits the first NOTE at 4:54, and the jamming around it is typically good.
Nothing terribly grand. The jamming before the second shot at the Note is textbook.. off key off beat chording.. but the Second
Note is kinda flubbed.. around 5:38. Niiiice sustain on it, though. Charge at 5:54.. then.. "Boy" at 6:11, after an ok scream,
which is almost started too early. BMGS/WUDMTF ("boy man god shit/wash uffizi drive me to firenzi") segment is about as
standard as they get. Typically groovy. Tramps (trampolines -- when Trey and Mike jump on them) segment/jam begins at
8:18, and Page is pretty active in the opening.. Mike is signaling for the tramps moves. Page's jamming is ok.. nothing that grand
for him in this segment. Trey comes in at 9:13 jamming with Page, but this is the second half of the tramps jam segment, and not
the opening of the jam segment... this segment is pretty standard fare, imo. Jam segment opens at 9:49 with Trey noodling
semi-melodiously, and Mike funking along repetitively. Trey gets pretty quiet in here early.. a very Mysterious effort from him
until around 10:30, when he gets into a repetitive groove that captivates and gets one interested in what's to come.. but this jam
dies out after fifteen seconds and starts getting weird. Trey starts playing staccato'ed ascending scales repetitively, and Page
funks out on the Clav. Trey breaks out around 11:30 soloing in the upper reaches of the 'doc in more of a YEM mood. The
jamming around 12 minutes is your typical smokin' YEM jamming. Trey's noodling is very melodious, but with a bite.. typical
closing fiery licks around 12:45 (with a growl from Fish in here). Grand accompaniment from Fish, Page and Mike... the jam
segment dies out rather lamely with effects from Trey, though. None of the customary closing trilling. Though this is by no means
a typical ending to the jam segment, I still don't find it especially endearing. Bass and drums ("B&D") is hard to start given all the
semi-spacey effects crap from Trey that segues into this B&D segment. In a normal version, 13:16 would start B&D, but in this
version strange effects from Trey's 'doc pervade the B&D opening... Mike doesn't really let loose until 13:52 or so.. pretty
straightfoward, too. Very repetitive. Until around 14:35 when he turns on a severe effect that FUNKS in a somewhat metallic,
21st century manner.. some nice closing licks, but nothing that special. Closing WUDMTF segment at 15:10.. with ensuing
vocal jam. The vocal jam is FANTASTIC, but this version of YEM really ain't that grand, imo. 20:32 total time. (B- rating) I
can only assume that the band picked this YEM for the DLCD because of its reasonably error-free segments and beautiful
vocal Jam. Personally, I would have chosen a version that had a KICKASS JAM SEGMENT. two cents
