There's an excellent, heart-stopping Bowie in this set, by the way.
Easily one of the finest versions. I believe I owe Jay Rose some
thanks for turning me on to this set (if it is someone else I should
thank for this set, I apologize).

YEM's opening is standard. The pre-Nirvana section is gorgeous --
very spacey and enchanting, like many versions from 1994-95. Crowd
begins clapping in the wrong time, though. "Nirvana" does not occur
until 3:33. Ahhh.. I love this section. This was one of the first
composed parts of a Phish song that really attracted me to Phish way
back when (1989). Mike's solo section begins at 4:16 and it is very
upbeat and amusing -- Mike tools around melodiously. The "pre-charge"
(when the trampolines are brought out, usually, by Brad Sands) is
standard, and the first shot at the Note is hit well and jammed out,
around 5:40. Second shot at the Note at 6:23 doesn't sound that pretty
at first, but Trey soon regains his composure and sustains it out.

"Boy" (after the Charge and scream) at 6:58. Fish lets out a "AHHH!"
before Shiiiiit. The WUDMTF segment is standard (let me take a moment
to publicly say that anyone who doubts that they usually sing
WUDMTF in this section is AN IDIOT and should be violently removed
from the gene pool). Tramps jam at 9:08 and Page begins soloing, and
Mike begins signaling a bit around 9:30 for the tramps turns. Nice
soloing from Page in here -- Fish lets out a "WHOA!"

Jam segment basically kicks in around 10:38, with MIKE, of all people,
melodiously soloing in the lower octaves at first. Trey begins
noodling softly (it is neither Rock Star Trey, nor Godzilla vs.
Mothra, nor meaningless musicianly meandering.. it is just SOFT
NOODLING... or gentle, somewhat thoughtless musical meandering..
that's it..). Fish's accompaniment (& Page's) is similarly delicate
and polite, remaining in the background while Mike and Trey tool
around.

By around 12:35 or so, Trey starts repeatedly teasing "Frankenstein"
(but subtly in the lower octaves -- they don't start blazing it out or
anything). This jam, originally driven by Frankenstein, begins a
triumphant crescendo that evolves into a FANTASTIC, RAGING, CLIMACTIC
YEM jam, which is far better than anything in the recently performed
12/29/97 You Enjoy Myself, fwiw. This killer *JAM* (which has a lot
in common with June 1995 YEM jam segments in intensity) rages until

15:57 when Mike and Fish take over, with Mike tearing shit up
mellifluously right from the start!! Fish lets out a few "YEAH!!"'s
in here, too.

At 16:49, the closing WUDMTF segment begins, and the vocal jam ensues
within the usual 20 seconds. I refuse to attempt reviewing this vocal
jam, except to say that it is a bit violent; is more/less typical for
'94; and that, at around 22 minutes, Trey very briefly teases
something that I have heard before, I believe in the White Album
somewhere... He makes three passes at the hooty melody (within 30
seconds of the end of side A on my tape, fwiw). Damn. I just checked
out the White Album (I forgot how amusing He Ent to the Bog with the
Bond music and MINKIN were.. The Ubiquitous Smokey) *AND* Trey's Fall
'85 4 Track Project and it isn't on them. But then again, I don't
have my older copy of the White Album, which had Aftermath and Ingest
on them. Could be one of those I guess. The hooty melody that is
teased in here is something I am 100% certain I have heard Trey do
before, though, somewhere, but I thought for sure it was on something
obscure. The TONE of the melody is SIMILAR to the ending of the White
Album version of "Fluff's Travels" -- what is sung in there, at the
very end.

The VJ also becomes a HYHU VOCAL JAM around 22:30 or something (cut to
side B). The VJ is also way too damn long, in my opinion. I for one
don't miss them at all. I'd rather they played Brother. =^] The HYHU
vocal jam includes some vacuum from Fish, btw, before Honey Love kicks
in. This is an easy B+ YEM..

p.s. In honor of MLK day, I'll dub, for the first 20 or so people who
respond (with room left for digesters, as always), a 100 minute tape
for a blank and postage that has, on side A, a low gen copy of Martin
Luther King's last sermon, given at Washington National Cathedral on
Sunday March 31 1968. It is easily at least a 9.0 sermon on the Saint
Thomas Acquinas Sermon Review Poll scale. On side B, there'll be a
low gen copy of the Winston Salem Bathtub Gin -> JAM from 11/23/97
(plus some of the DWD), which is one of the most thrilling, powerful
and ripping jams in Phishtory. The 8/13/93 Murat Gin is a PIECE OF
DOGSHIT in light of this version. Only pleasant, thoughtful requests
will be accepted.
