8/6/96 Red Rocks Amphitheater, Morrison, CO The very opening is a little more loose than usual, but the opening segment
in general is strong. Around 3:15, Page's clav action is quite groovy, as is Mike's accompaniment in this lil pre-Ebeneezer jam
segment. No screaming on Ebeneezer particularly (Fish may have screamed for a couple seconds initially.. can't quite tell). Jam
segment 4:35 (about the usual time, fwiw), and immediately Trey melodiously soars, with some very kind sustain and trilling in
the ensuing 30 seconds. Mike's accompaniment is particularly profound (and noticeable on this bass-heavy sennheiser me 67s
D>A.. thanks Phil). He's snappin' them licks mightily. At 6:15 or so, the groove is in Essential Tweezer mode, with the band
members clearly listening to one another, and nothing especially meritorious occuring (outside of pleasant, semi-melodious
improv with full-band direction). Trey's quick licks around 8 minutes pick up the groove a bit, and soon he's leading the band
more skyward. Page, Mike and Jon lay it down gloriously, beneath Trey's fully consonant noodling and chording and sustaining.
Around 10 minutes, the jam, for the first time, enters a more semi-dissonant and repetitive groove, but at 10:15, Trey breaks
out into a beautiful, repetitive solo of sorts that Page accompanies spectacularly. And at 10:47, Norwegian Wood is clearly
teased by Trey, and then repeated (twice; Norwegian Wood's main theme). For the next minute, Trey druidically solos around
the melody of the 'Wood theme, masterfully dancing around it (with some very quick, mellifluous licks and sustain and trills here
and there...). The intensity definitely picks up around 12:15, but the jam doesn't rage in 12/2/95 fashion, or anything otherwise
Antelopian in its majesty. Around 13:20 there's some sweet trilling from Trey in the upper reaches of the 'doc, followed yet
again by more mellifluous soloing (and accompaniment!). The final couple minutes are, like the entire jam segment, VERY
POWERFUL -- the intensity of the groove of this Tweezer is well above the mean. But, in all fairness to other kickass versions,
the groove of this Tweezer never explores new territory, or even unusual territory. It, nevertheless, is consistently melodious and
powerful (which is certainly NOT the norm). The NOTE occurs at 15:30, and then the Dying Out of the Jam ending begins..
nothing of note. Total time 16:55 (a few seconds, and then what has become my favorite version of Prince Caspian (better than
Utah) begins). 7.5 rating for the Norwegian Tweezer... DAMN I LOVE THE NEW ARRANGEMENT OF CASPIAN!!!!!
Oh to be Prince Caspian, with stumps instead of feet.. (there's even some SERIOUS trilling from Trey in this jam segment!!!
=^] )
